Wineries in Ashe County
If you’ve never tasted a good North Carolina mountain wine, now’s your chance!
At Thistle Meadow Winery, Proprietor Tom Burgiss makes your visit a top priority and often conducts the wonderful 1-hour wine-tasting event himself and also includes
a tour of the winery.
Thistle Meadow has won a number of regional and state awards for wine-making and its signature wine “Horse Stomp Red,” is a local favorite. It features the taste and aroma of raspberries blended with White Zinfandel. Burgiss says this wine is best served chilled, “along with dark chocolate.” Thistle Meadow Winery is located in Laurel Springs.
The area ’s newest winery is the New River Winery, located in Lansing – in the shadow of developing Phoenix Mountain. This winery produces several local favorites, including “Back Porch Blueberry”. There’s also a red and white wine named for a local art gallery and coffee shop, Bohemia, where the wines can be purchased, in downtown West Jefferson.
