The first settlers to Ashe County were entrepreneurs in the truest sense. Arriving with determination and a strong work ethic, these early pioneers built the county. That spirit continues with the independent character of the people and the abundance of natural resources that are still plentiful today. Ashe County plays an active role in encouraging the entrepreneur and supports a growing business community.Examples include the county’s participation with the Certified Entrepreneurial Community (CEC) designation, an AdvantageWest initiative to promote and support entrepreneurial activity. Ashe County, through a Golden LEAF grant and NC REAL, is benefiting from teacher training to instill entrepreneurial skills within the K-12 program. The new expansion of the airport demonstrates Ashe County’s active preparation for the continuing economic growth in the county. Construction is underway on a new 5,000-foot runway, which will accommodate the next level of jet and other aircraft. Additional hangar space is planned and the entire site is redesigned to allow for future growth.
In recent years, the growing tourism market has spawned many supporting industries. New hotels have opened and cabin rentals are increasing to accommodate the lodging needs of visitors. Restaurants are thriving. Retail stores and art galleries are prospering as visitors to the county seek that special item to take home. The construction industry is also experiencing growth as many visitors make the transition from tourists to settling down as residents. New showrooms have opened to accommodate the growing home building industry, providing the equipment, materials and services needed to build a new home. Banking, mortgage, insurance and property management companies are experiencing growth as well.
Agriculture always remains an important segment of the economy. Christmas trees, organic products, grapes, heritage apples, and self-pick berry farms are only a few of the agricultural endeavors actively supporting the Ashe County economy.
